In today's lesson, you have learnt about the meaning of Genre, how and why genres are used, and more specifically, the use of Recounts. Since I was a journalist for a few years before I entered teaching, I began the lesson series with the News subgenre. News is frequently thought to be "true", "objective" or "perfect". However, News is produced by people, and there is a tendency for biases to creep in time and again. You have seen an example in today's exercise on the two reports about Singapore's victory in the ASEAN Cup. So, think carefully before you accept all the "News" that you get as true. I am not suggesting that Journalists are liars, no. However, they are also humans with their own beliefs, biases and preferences. Thus, what they write or show may not be the complete picture.
In the Second Lesson, or Part 2 of Factual Recounts, we proceeded to examine Genre-mixing, something that I enjoy and study very much. We heard how Orson Welles tried to use the News subgenre to tell a story. Some of you may find it creative and interesting, while others might find that he had done the wrong thing by confusing others. These are perfectly valid arguments. In fact, these views were brought up by many other people who experienced the original broadcast. If you would like to read more about it, do visit the Wikipedia site for more information at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_War_of_the_Worlds_%28radio%29.
Finally, your homework for these 2 lessons is a short reflection on a story you would or would not like to see presented in a News style. Do explain why you chose the text, and why you would or would not like to see the story being presented in this manner. Remember, these lessons are designed to allow you to think, imagine, and argue, so your answer is neither right nor wrong, but more importantly, these lessons should make you wonder "WHY" texts are written in certain ways. Post your reflection by clicking on the "comment" links below, do remember to leave your name in your post. ALL ANONYMOUS POSTS WILL BE EATEN UP, AND ALL ANONYMOUS POSTERS WILL BE BEATEN UP!!! Happy thinking!

In today lesson,we learn about three things, it is about genres, recount and text. so,I will start taking what is a text.A text is anything that have words. For example:a book,a compo{the short form},a textbook and....... We learn about genre{but it is read as John-er as the word came from french}.A genre is a group of text which share common features and purposes. For example, narratives:Fariy tales,stories,legend......
Instructions: recipes,gudies.......
Explanations:entries,non-fiction text
Recounts
The last thing I learn is recounts.Recounts is related to news, diaries,Journals, personal letters ,biographies and....... The purpose of recounts is used to report important events, tell us what happened around the world today. All these are called factual recounts.Personal things such as diary, in talking between people. This is known as personal recounts. Now, ask yourselve must recounts be personal or factual or not? The answer does not matter it is wrong or correct or not, recount can be write in different forms. It is known as genre-mixing,meaning is combines genre. It could also used as an afictional event. That is all I learn that day!

I would not like to see article B published in the newspaper. Article B is biased towards Thailand and a balnced view is not given.Article A is more objective and perfect as it gives a more balanced view of the whole match. I would prefer to see article A published more than article B.
Scary movie 4
If it was written in a news genre,
local residents would thought that
people in other countries can control the whole earth.More
importantly, they would think that aliens would bring them to their therotory and kill those people one by one.the writer who did this would be serverly punished

I felt that Olson Welles had his funtime but the people who were listening to the news were frighten. Because of that, he should not have done that or people might think that it is the end of the world!!!

Book Title: The Blue Boa
Why: It is a fantasy, it's exciting, and interesting.
So What: If I want it to be the news reported like The War Of The Worlds on October 30th 1938, people will be scared, and they will panick. Especially the part where the main characters have to face the Blue Boa and the part of the invisible boy.
Sincerely,

Hi all,
thank you for your contributions to the discussion.
Min Hui,
Orson Welles was an extremely famous scriptwriter. He also made a few films, and his movie "Citizen Kane" is considered one of the best films ever made. The film can be quite difficult to understand, so I won't talk about it very much. However, his radio play was extremely exciting back then. Very few television or radio programs created the impact the "War of the Worlds" created. It was scary, yes, but Orson Welles thought that since it was a Halloween special, nobody would get hurt. Unfortunately, some people did. Orson Welles died in 1985, and you can read more about him in Wikipedia.
Roy and Rachel,
I agree with you that what Welles did may cause a lot of fear. It is hard for us to imagine sometimes that people could actually do such foolish things based on what they hear or see in the media. But it is true, people do believe what they see and hear. What Welles was trying to do was to produce a creative and interesting programme, as well as to see how people react. Really good writers play on their readers' emotions. Welles was one of those. Perhaps he went overboard, and if I put myself in the listeners' shoes 70 years ago, I might have been scared out of my wits. But we have to learn to think with our minds. False news reports still take place everyday, and sometimes they can affect us greatly. There was an earthquake tremor felt in Singapore this week. Can you imagine if the news reported that many people died and that Orchard Road is completely destroyed? How would we react? Some irresponsible people did post some silly news that Singapore will encounter a major earthquake this week. If we were to believe them, we would have to run away very soon! So, it is extremely important that we must sharpen our minds so that we can tell what is real from what is not real. That is the whole point of my series of lesson. I hope you have learnt something!

I feel that genres are fun and that i want6 to learn more about it.
I learnt alot of things from that lesson. I learnt what was the real meaning of genre( and i also learnt how to pronounce it correctly!) I also learnt about recounts. Your lessons are extreme interesting!
P.S.Why was Orson Welles so famous? how come people believed all his made-up stories? ^-^
Tan Xuan Li
ya...why did ppl believe his story...maybe it was because they had no television that time and only had a radio...and he was so famous that ppl all believed his made up story...but did he write the script about war of the worlds? If he did then why would ppl believe him and his silly stories? But how could he trick ppl that like his scripts i think if they knew the story was all made up...they would dislike him for life...
